How Tilio helps your brand appear in the sources AI cites
AI answers can cite articles that feature your competitors but leave you out. We explain how Tilio identifies those gaps, approaches publishers and tracks what changes.
In this post
We review the sources cited in your tracked AI answers, identify relevant gaps and work with publishers to improve how your business is represented. Then we measure what changes.
An AI answer recommends a competitor. One of its citations leads to a comparison article that includes them but leaves your business out.
That gives us a specific opportunity to investigate. Is the article relevant to your customers? Does your business meet its criteria? Could you contribute something that would make it more useful?
This is how Tilio approaches gaps in third-party coverage, from finding the opportunity to checking what happens after publication.
Find the gaps
We start with the questions tracked for your business and review the URLs cited in the answers.
We look for articles that mention competitors but omit you, descriptions that are inaccurate or outdated, and relevant pages where your expertise could add something useful.
For each opportunity, we record the page, the question it appeared against, the engine and the date. That keeps the work tied to evidence from your tracking.
If you’re wondering why AI recommends a competitor instead of you, examining those sources is one place to start.
Choose what matters
A cited page is a lead to assess. We check whether it covers your services, reaches the right market and gives your business a credible reason to feature.
We prioritise pages that appear repeatedly for relevant questions. A specialist article cited across several checks may warrant more attention than a loosely related page that appeared once.
We also consider whether a change is realistic. An independent publisher may welcome a factual correction or useful contribution. A competitor’s own comparison page presents a different prospect.
Prepare useful evidence
The publisher needs a reason to consider the suggestion.
Depending on the article, we might prepare product details, expert commentary, original data, a case study or evidence supporting a factual correction. The contribution should address something specific in the page and help its readers.
For example, if a supplier comparison overlooks a capability your business offers, we would provide evidence of that capability and explain how it fits the comparison’s criteria.
Contact the publisher
We approach the author or editor with a specific suggestion for the article.
That means identifying the relevant section, explaining what could be added or corrected, and supplying the material needed to assess it. The publisher retains control over whether and how it appears.
Where an opportunity involves payment, we discuss the commercial terms with you before proceeding. We keep paid placements distinct from independent editorial coverage in reporting.
Manage the update
We handle follow-ups, prepare any requested copy and coordinate your review with the publisher.
Once a change is live, we check the published page. We confirm that the information is accurate, any agreed links work and the contribution appears as expected.
We record the URL, publication date and the change made. This creates a clear record for subsequent monitoring.
Measure what changes
Publication is the first outcome we record. We then continue running the same tracked questions to see whether the page is cited again and whether your business appears in those answers.
We report three things separately:
- Coverage: what was published or corrected.
- Citations: whether subsequent answers link to that page.
- Brand mentions: whether those answers name your business.
Securing coverage does not guarantee an AI citation or recommendation. Repeated checks help us establish whether the change is followed by a consistent pattern, while accounting for other work and changes in the results.
If competitors keep appearing in sources that overlook your business, our AI Visibility Audit can help identify which gaps deserve attention first.
FAQ
Is this the same as link building?
Our starting point is the sources cited in your tracked AI answers. We look for relevant gaps in how those pages represent your business, then work with publishers on useful additions or corrections. We track coverage, citations and brand mentions separately.
Do we need to pay publishers to feature?
Some opportunities involve an editorial contribution or factual correction. Others involve a paid placement. Where payment is required, we discuss the terms with you before proceeding and report paid coverage separately.
Can Tilio handle the outreach for us?
Yes. We identify relevant opportunities, prepare the contribution, contact the publisher and manage follow-ups. We coordinate your review and check the published change.
Does appearing in an article guarantee an AI recommendation?
No. A publisher mentioning your business and an AI answer recommending it are separate outcomes. We continue tracking the same questions to see whether the updated page is cited and your business appears in subsequent answers.
